The Silkscreening Process
Design Preparation
The Silkscreening process begins with the preparation of the design to be printed. This design, often created digitally, is separated into individual colors or layers, each of which will be applied separately. These layers are used to create the stencils necessary for the printing process.
Creating the Stencils
A stencil is created for each color in the design. Traditionally, silk mesh screens were used, but today, various materials like polyester are commonly employed. The stencil is created by blocking out areas where ink should not pass through, leaving the open areas where the ink will be applied.
Printing and Curing
With the stencils in place, the actual printing process begins. Ink is applied to the screen, and a squeegee is used to push the ink through the open areas of the stencil and onto the printing surface, whether it's fabric, paper, or other materials.
After printing, the ink needs to be cured to ensure durability. This is often done through heat curing or exposure to UV light, depending on the type of ink used. Once cured, the print is set and ready for use.
